Everyone Counts, the Point-in-Time Count is intended to provide a snapshot of a community’s homeless population on a given night in late March. It is one way to record the number of individuals and families staying in temporary, emergency shelter or those staying outside without adequate and safe accommodation.
The Point-in-Time Count is an important effort that ensures the voices of people experiencing homelessness in our community are heard and efforts are made to provide a…ppropriate, accessible services. The count also helps to develop strategies and effective plans to measure progress towards ending homelessness in Kamloops.
The PiT Count is a huge coordinated effort between Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), Homelessness Partnering Strategy (HPS), the City of Kamloops, local non-profit organizations, and most importantly, our volunteers.
The Count is set to take place from March 27-March 28. March 27 is the sheltered count and we already have volunteers for this. However, on March 28 is when we physically walk the streets and survey everyone we encounter; this will start at 7am. Most volunteers are needed for that. The day of the count we have two drop-in stations available. One at Parkview Activity Centre and one at United Church downtown (PIT STOP). AT these stations, individuals can talk to a counsellor, a nurse, an Elder, and have a free hot meal and drinks.
There will also be free transit on March 28, so participants can easily get from and to these drop in stations.
